Everything from world-class competition to parties and silent auctions await this weekend!

As weekend three at Horse Shows by the Bay approaches, you won't want to miss several events that feature some of the very best equestrian competitors in the world.

Tonight at 5:30, the weekend kicks off with the $10,000 Open Jumper Welcome Prix, which will serve as superb entertainment for those who attend the Recess party (see column at right). Show exhibitors will also be treated to a wine, beer, & cheese social sponsored by Bowers Harbor Vineyard.

Friday, competitive jumper competitions take place at 3pm and 4pm.

Then on Saturday, the fireworks truly begin. At 1pm, spectators will be treated to the HJAM Equitation Medal Finals, featuring the very best riders from throughout the State of Michigan. This is the first time that Traverse City will serve as host for the Hunter/Jumper Association of Michigan's finals, and the quality of riders will be superb. The actual competition is Equitation, meaning that the rider's form and function are evaluated. In Phase One, riders will jump a course of 8 jumps; in Phase Two, riders return together to ride on the flat, demonstrating their skills at the walk, trot, and canter.  Additional tests may be asked by the judges.

Then at 5:30 Saturday will be the final Grand Prix of the series, the $30,000 Cherry Capital Classic Grand Prix, sponsored by D-BRAIDER. The big prize dollars have attracted some world class competitors for this culminating event.

And, while this competition is going on, there will be a silent auction fundraiser for CANTER-MI, the Michigan chapter of a nationwide horse rescue group that rescues and rehabiliates ex-race horses.  CANTER-MI is the Michigan Chapter. Events include one-of-a-kind collectibles, such as fine art and equipment worn by some of the world's most famous race horses. The silent auction will take place in the VIP/Sponsor Tent from 1-5pm. For more details and items being auctioned, click here and scroll down to CANTER silent auction.

On Sunday, the $10,000 Children's/Adult Jumper Prix will be the feature event, held at 2pm. That competition will be preceded by a dressage demonstration from local rider Betsy Van Dyke.
